SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Azusa Pacific snapped its two game losing streak in a dominant way, as the Cougars defeated Lake Superior State by a 75-33 final on Tuesday afternoon at San Diego City College. The 33 points scored by Lake Superior State is the lowest amount Azusa Pacific has allowed in the last seven years, as the Cougars defeated Point Loma by a 57-31 final on January 8, 2013.
Four Cougars scored in double figures, led by 13 points each from
Laura Pranger and
Molly Whitmore, while
Zoe March and
Paige Uyehara scored 10 points apiece. Pranger also grabbed nine rebounds, which was tied for the game-high with teammate
Alex Lowden, and finished with four blocks and two steals. In addition to Pranger, four other Cougars had multiple steals in the game, led by four steals from
Daylee Hanson.
After the first quarter of play, Azusa Pacific held an 18-13 lead. The Cougars would turn up the defensive pressure in a huge way from that point on, as the Lakers made just two field goals over the remaining three quarters. In the first quarter, the Lakers shot 44% (4-for-9) from the floor. In the final three quarters, Lake Superior State went 1-for-10 from the floor (10%) in the second, 1-for-9 (11%) in the third, and did not make a field goal in the fourth and final quarter (0-for-9). Lake Superior State finished the game just 6-for-37 (16%) from the floor, with four of those field goals coming from beyond-the-arc. Azusa Pacific forced the Lakers into 28 turnovers, in which the Cougars converted into 34 points off of turnovers.
Offensively, the Cougars saw their best production in the second and fourth quarters of action. In both quarters, Azusa Pacific scored over 20 points. In the second, the Cougars scored 22 points off of an 8-for-18 (44%) effort from the floor, including 3-for-5 (60%) from the three-point line. Of the eight made field goals, five were assisted on. Azusa Pacific closed out the game with a 9-for-18 (50%) shooting performance from the floor in the fourth quarter, as the Cougars scored 21 points.
Rachel Bozlee scored six points in the final quarter off of two made three-pointers. Overall, Azusa Pacific finished the game 29-for-71 (41%) from the floor, scoring 34 points in the paint and receiving 36 points from its bench. The Cougars turned the ball over just eight times in the contest, allowing the Lakers just four points off of turnovers.
Following the dominating non-conference victory, Azusa Pacific improves to 8-2 on the season and is set to return to PacWest play. The Cougars will host two conference opponents this week, beginning with a Thursday, Dec. 19 matchup with Holy Names. Azusa Pacific will then take on Point Loma on Saturday, Dec. 21. Thursday's game will start at 2:15, while Saturday's action is set to tip-off at 2:00 pm.
