Despite grabbing two goals early in the match, Azusa Pacific was under pressure late in the match and needed
Isaac Bawa's 100
th-minute goal to seal the victory 3-2 over Hawaii Hilo.
"We started out well," said head coach Dave Blomquist, "We challenged our guys to start well tonight because we felt that we didn't do that on Saturday. We moved the ball well, created some good chances and got a couple of great goals from David."
The Cougars took the lead in the 12
th minute by way of
David Kwinn, who got on to the end of a lay off pass from
Arturo Astorga inside the box and slotted his shot past the keeper. Kwinn netted his second goal of the match in the 26
th minute when he headed a free kick from
Renan Gomes into the back of the net.
"On the first goal, Arturo laid me off really well and I was able to kind of hit it around the keeper. On the second goal, Renan whipped in a great ball and I caught the goalie off balance and headed it in across the goal. Two great passes to be honest," said Kwinn.
Hilo was up to the challenge, however, and the Vulcans got a goal back with 10 seconds remaining in the first half. Hawaii Hilo broke out on a counter attack and recent substitutes Kadon Black and Devan Yoshimura combined for the goal.
"I think that was a little bit of a lack of concentration," said Blomquist. "This is the kind of game where, if you switch off for a second, you're picking the ball out of the back of the net. We just weren't engaged or communicating off of the throw-in and it cost us."
Jorge Martinez drew the Vulcans level in the 69
th minute, putting away a set piece from Henrique Castilho to make it 2-2.
After a flurry of chances for the Cougars at the end of regulation, the match went into overtime. The Cougars had a couple of early chances in the overtime period but could not find the back of the net until the 100
th minute. Azusa Pacific earned a corner,
Gregoire Diep sent in a cross to the top of the six-yard box, and
Isaac Bawa's header found the back of the net for the 3-2 victory.
"That is the most amazing feeling ever," said Bawa. "Back home in Ghana, I scored a lot of goals, but here in America, they just weren't coming. But I talked to my teammates today and said 'today is the day' and they kept encouraging me to keep taking shots and one would come. So when the corner came in, I said 'God this is the time for it' and by the grace of God the ball went in."
After the hard-fought victory,
David Kwinn noted that they are expecting more of these types of matches on the road ahead.
"The first thing that Coach Blomquist said was 'this is a reality check. We have to keep working hard.' Even though we played a team at the bottom of the table, they still fought, and everyone wants to beat Azusa Pacific."
Pacific finished the match with 29 shots and 17 on goal, forcing 14 saves from Hilo keeper Michael Harre. The Cougars' defense allowed just eight shots with four on goal. With the win, the Cougars keep their undefeated record alive at 13-0-0 and look forward to their next match at home against Chaminade on Saturday, November 2.
