Point Loma Sweeps Cougars

Azusa Pacific fell 3-0 on Friday evening in San Diego to Point Loma.

SAN DIEGO, Calif. -- Point Loma swept Azusa Pacific 3-0 on Friday night, as the Cougars were handed their first PacWest loss of the season.

In set one, Point Loma jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead, as the Sea Lions scored the first points of the match. The 3-0 start proved to be the cushion Point Loma needed, as the Cougars were unable to pull within three points for the entirety of the set.

Down 1-0 in the match, Azusa Pacific looked to draw even with a second set win. However, Point Loma turned a 5-4 deficit into a 12-5 lead as the Sea Lions scored eight unanswered points to take control of the set and eventually go up 2-0 in the match.

With Azusa Pacific battling to stay alive in the third set, the two teams were locked in a back and forth frame. The Cougars looked to be in control of the set when they took a 17-12 lead, but Point Loma stuck around by rattling off three consecutive points to cut Azusa Pacific's lead to 17-15. The Cougars seemed to fend off Point Loma's momentum, as they had set point at 24-22, yet, the Sea Lions would not fold and took three straight points to grab their first lead of the set at 25-24. The Cougars were able to tie the set at 25-25 from a kill by Aliyah Morrison, but Point Loma closed the book on the match with a kill and an attack error by Azusa Pacific to finish the set 27-25.

Katarina Radisic and Julianne Miller led the Cougars with nine kills apiece. Bailey Hennington the defensive effort with 16 digs in the match. Mina Andjelkovic posted 27 assists.

With the loss, Azusa Pacific is 13-3 overall, and 7-1 in the PacWest conference. The Cougars will be back home on Monday, Oct. 21, when they welcome fellow PacWest member Holy Names to the Felix Event Center for a 6:00 p.m. match.
