SAN DIEGO, Calif. -- No. 1 ranked Azusa Pacific defeated Point Loma Saturday afternoon to continue its undefeated season by a final score of 2-0. The Cougars have won their first 10 games of the season, including 3-0 start to conference play.Â
The Cougars scored first in the 18th minute of the game. Senior midfielder Arturo Astorga was the goal scorer, as he put in his fifth goal of the season which is the third most on the team behind James Ndubueze (9) and David Kwinn (6).
With the halftime score at 1-0, the Cougars doubled their lead in the 52nd minute. Freshman Daniel Osei-tutu scored his second goal of the season as he was set up by junior defender Leo Tomasi who was credited with an assist.Â
The Cougars outshot the Sea Lions 14-9 in the game including three shots on goal to just two for Point Loma. The Cougars have now defeated Point Loma twice this season with one being in conference play while the other was a non-conference meeting in Azusa, which the Cougars won 3-1 on September 14. The Sea Lions proved to be a tougher test this time around as the two teams competed in a more evenly-matched game than the previous.Â
Among other standouts, sophomore defender Isaac Bawa played 90 minutes in the shutout and had two shots as well. Junior forward David Kwinn had four shots (one on goal) to lead the Cougars, while junior midfielder Danillo Dias had two shots of his own.Â
Junior goalkeeper Nathaniel Lindquist started for the fifth time this season and produced his third straight clean sheet. His previous two came against Seattle Pacific on Sept. 28th and against Holy Names on Oct. 5th.
The Cougars next match will be against Concordia next Saturday, October 19th. Kick off is set for 3:30p.m in Azusa at the Cougar Soccer Complex. The Cougars and Eagles met September 21 in a non-conference match in Irvine, as the Cougars prevailed with a 2-1 victory. The upcoming matchup will be a conference game between the two PacWest schools.
