HONOLULU -- Azusa Pacific opened a three-game road trip to the Hawaiian islands with an 83-59 win over Chaminade Monday night. The Cougars were led by Rachel Bozlee, who set the Azusa Pacific school record for the most three-pointers made in a game, hitting her ninth three in the final seconds of the game while giving her a career-high 27 points. Bozlee entered the game with the 28th most three-pointers made in the nation, but nine more put her at 60, which ranks sixth in Division II in made three-pointers.
How it Happened: The Cougars dominated Chaminade in almost every statistical category. From the floor, Azusa Pacific shot 51.6 percent (33-for-64), including 35.7 percent (10-for-28) from beyond the arc. Chaminade went 25-for-64 (39.1%) from the field, while going just 3-for-15 (20%) from behind the three-point line. The Cougars out-rebounded Chaminade 47-26, while scoring twice as many second chance points, with a 12-6 advantage. Azusa Pacific finished with 20 assists, while Chaminade had just eight assists as a team. The Cougars' bench outscored the Silverswords' reserves, 39-23.
Turning Point: With 5:46 left before halftime, Azusa Pacific held a 25-15 lead. Over the next two and a half minutes, the Cougars went on a 15-2 run, as Bozlee knocked down four three-pointers and junior Savanna Hanson added a three of her own. With 2:24 left before halftime, the Cougars held a 40-17 lead.
Azusa Pacific Standouts: While Bozlee's record-breaking performance led the way for Azusa Pacific, several other Cougars made significant contributions to the victory. Savanna Hanson recorded her seventh double-double of the season, as she scored 12 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. She also had four assists, two steals, and a block. Two other Cougars also scored in double figures, as junior Daylee Hanson scored 14 points and senior Samantha Huddleston added 12 points. Daylee Hanson also had nine rebounds, three assists and two steals. Huddleston had eight rebounds and two assists.
Chaminade Standouts: Destiny Castro carried the offensive load for the Silverswords, as she finished with 16 points. Castro also had a game-high five steals. Michaella Dean grabbed a team-high five rebounds./
Up Next: Azusa Pacific, now 17-3 overall and a perfect 14-0 in the PacWest, has two more road contests in Hawai'i. The Cougars will stay on the island of O'ahu for a few more days, as they will take on Hawai'i Pacific on Wednesday, Jan. 30 at 7:30 p.m. (HST). Following Wednesday's game, Azusa Pacific will travel to the Big Island, as it will take on Hawai'i Hilo on Friday, Feb. 1 at 7:30 p.m. (HST).
