Taking Names

Azusa Pacific sweeps second straight PacWest opponent

AZUSA, Calif. -- In its second PacWest match of the season, Azusa Pacific picked up right where it left off in their opener. The PacWest favorite swept visiting Holy Names in three sets, 25-10, 25-7, 25-19 Friday night at the Felix Event Center.

Holy Names scored the first point of the match, taking a 1-0 lead, but the Cougars never trailed again in the match.

Junior middle blocker Julianne Miller was a force to be reckoned with throughout the match. She tallied 18 consecutive kills without an error, putting her within striking distance of the APU single-game record she already shares for hitting percentage. Through two sets, she had 13 kills on 18 errorless attempts for a hitting percentage of .722, just shy of the .750 mark she recorded in the second-to-last match of the regular season last year. Miller registered five more kills in the final set and finished at .654 with 18 kills and one error in 26 attempts. The performance propels Miller among the national leaders in the category with a season hitting percentage of .432.

As a team, Azusa Pacific produced a season-high .380 attack percentage and received quality performances from freshmen Emma Svagdis and Emily Gillingham. Both players came off the bench and brought significant production, as Gillingham finished with five kills and eight digs, while Svagdis had five kills, six digs, and a solo block.

Miller led the Cougars with 18 kills, and junior Sara Wagenveld finished with six kills. Senior setter Kaylen Higa set up the attack for the Cougars throughout the match, finishing with 32 assists, while freshman Chase Davis dished out 13 assists. Sophomore Sophia Newhouse led Azusa Pacific with 14 digs.

The Cougars will have a quick turnaround, hosting Academy of Art on Saturday, September 8 at 3:00 p.m. The busy weekend is part of a string of seven consecutive PacWest matches at home for Azusa Pacific before hitting the road at the end of the month with a weekend visit to the Bay Area to take on Notre Dame de Namur and Dominican.
