Second-Half Surge Lifts Cougars

AZUSA, Calif. -- No first-half goals, no problem.

For the third straight game, Azusa Pacific produced all its scoring in the second half, rallying from a 2-0 halftime deficit with three second-half scores to rally for a 3-2 win over Seattle Pacific Thursday night at the Cougar Soccer Complex.

David Kwinn got the Cougars on the board less than two minutes into the second half, redirecting a Bruno Pagani strike into the net towards the far post, and Gabriel Costa added the tying and go-ahead goals less than six minutes apart.

Azusa Pacific generated a 17-9 advantage in shots, including a 7-4 edge in the first half, but Seattle Pacific scored twice in the final five minutes of the first half to take a 2-0 edge at the break.

With the win, the Cougars improved to 2-1 on the season with eight goals through those three games. Seattle Pacific drops to 0-3.

Costa has both of Azusa Pacific's game-winners this year, and he also had the unassisted score which pulled the Cougars even at 2-2 in the 74th minute. After gathering a deflected cross from the right side, Costa juked free from his defender and tucked a 20-yard shot just inside the far post to tie the game at 2-2.

Six minutes later, Arturo Astorga led a counterattack up the right side of the field and laid it off to Kwinn in the center. He crossed it to the left side for Costa, who put it in the back of the net from 16 yards out to give the Cougars a 3-2 lead to protect for the final 10 minutes. Seattle Pacific got two shots off in the final minute, a Luke Postma header that missed wide off a corner kick at the 84-minute mark and a Reid Baez shot with three minutes left, which also went wide.

Up next for Azusa Pacific is a home game against Western Washington on Saturday, Sept. 8, at 2:30 p.m.
