Weekend Getaway To The Bay

Azusa Pacific sweeps brief Bay Area trip with 3-0 sweep over Dominican

SAN RAFAEL, Calif. -- In the second match of its quick two-day trip to the Bay Area, Azusa Pacific made quick work of a three-set sweep of Dominican, posting a 25-11, 25-10, 25-23 win over the Penguins Saturday afternoon.

Azusa Pacific wasted no time in the first set, jumping out to a quick 8-2 lead. Following a brief Dominican run, in which the Penguins cut the deficit to 9-6, the Cougars never lost two consecutive points for the remainder of the set. With the score at 16-10, Azusa Pacific strung together four consecutive points, making the score 20-10. Following a kill by Dominican, the Cougars finished off the first set with five consecutive points.
 
Early in the second set, with an 8-5 lead, sophomore Amy Hinnant recorded a kill which sparked Azusa Pacific to a five-point streak for a 13-5 lead. Following a Cougar attack error, junior Aliyah Morrison collected two straight kills to begin another five-point run for Azusa Pacific. The Cougars remained in firm control of the set, taking a 2-0 lead in the match after a convincing 15-point win.

The third set turned was the closest of the match, but the Cougars grew a 13-12 lead into a 17-12 advantage midway through the set. Dominican responded by narrowing the gap to 22-20, but Azusa Pacific got to match point on a Dominican error and a kill from senior Natalie Klapp. Dominican fought off three consecutive match points,cutting the margin to 24-23, but Morrison put the finishing touch on the match with a kill that gave the Cougars a 25-23 set win, along with the match victory.
 
Morrison led the Cougars with 12 kills in the match, and she added two blocks to the defensive effort. Junior Julianne Miller had nine kills on 17 attempts and only one error, posting a .471 hitting percentage, and she registered a team-high five blocks (four assists, one solo). Junior Sara Wagenveld finished the match with a .429 hitting percentage, recording seven kills on 14 attempts, with just one error. Senior Kaylen Higa had 23 assists in the match, and freshman Chase Davis contributed 17 assists as well. Freshman Katarina Radisic and sophomore Sophia Newhouse each added 13 digs for Azusa Pacific.
 
With the win, Azusa Pacific moves to 13-4 on the season, with a 9-0 PacWest record. Azusa Pacific returns to Southern California for a tough challenge with a match on the road at Biola on Wednesday, October 3 at 7:00 p.m. in the opening 2018-19 competition of the Cornerstone Cup Rivalry Series.
