Second Half Surge Sinks Sharks

Azusa Pacific scores four goals in second half to defeat Hawai'i Pacific, 5-2

HONOLULU, Hawai'i -- Azusa Pacific showed off its productive offensive attack in a 5-2 win over host Hawai'i Pacific on Saturday.

The Cougars faced an early deficit, as Hawai'i Pacific opened the scoring with an early goal in the 17th minute, but Cougars responded by tying the game at 1-1 in the 29th minute on a goal from sophomore James Ndubueze, assisted by Arturo Astorga. The goal was Ndubueze's fourth goal of the year.

Coming out of halftime, the scored remained 1-1, when Hawai'i Pacific opened the second half scoring with a goal in the 51st minute. Once again, Azusa Pacific responded just four minutes later, as junior Rene Santos scored his first goal of the season in the 55th minute. Astorga was credited with his second assist of the night, when he found Santos in the center of the box who then tapped the ball past the keeper.

The Cougars would then go on to score three unanswered goals throughout the rest of the second half. Senior Bruno Pagani found the back of the net in the 65th minute, freshman Gabriel Costa struck in 77th minute, and Astorga quickly followed in the 80th minute with the final goal of the match. Pagani recorded his first goal of the year, while Costa brings his total to a team-high six goals, and Astorga posted his fourth goal on the season.

The Cougars finished the match with 15 shots, including nine on goal, while Hawai'i Pacific had eight shots and four of those on goal.

With the win, Azusa Pacific improves to 5-1-1 overall and 2-0 in PacWest play, and the Cougars finish out the trip to Hawai'i with a visit to Hawai'i Hilo on Tuesday, September 25 4:30 p.m. (HAST).
