Cougars Sharp Against Silverswords

AZUSA, Calif. -- Azusa Pacific completed a nearly-perfect week with an impressive 25-23, 25-19, 25-11 sweep of Chaminade Thursday night, handing the Silverswords just their second defeat of the season while running the Cougars' PacWest-opening win streak to seven.

A balanced Azusa Pacific offense recorded a team hitting percentage of .349, with four different players going error-free in at least 10 attack attempts. Sophomore opposite hitter Amy Hinnant led the way with 10 kills and no errors in 14 attempts, and senior outside hitter Natalie Klapp added eight kills with only one error while collecting 10 digs.

"Chaminade returned quite a bit of their team from last year, and they have been playing very well so far this year," head coach Chris Keife said. "This was a good chance to watch them and see how they constantly apply pressure. Amy had one of the best games she's ever played for us, and she did a great job defensively and offensively."

Julianne Miller, Aliyah Morrison, and Sara Wagenveld each added six kills without an attack error, as Miller recorded a match-high seven blocks including four solo blocks. Freshman outside hitter Katarina Radisic was the Cougars' digs leader with 12.

"It's pretty amazing how deep we are," Miller said. "Our right sides Aliyah and Amy are both rocking it out there, and everyone's just doing their part. It's really cool to see everyone clicking and buying in."

The opening set delivered the toughest challenge of the match, as Chaminade held a 22-19 lead late in the set. An Azusa Pacific timeout at that point was the turning point of the set, as the Cougars won six of the final eight points to claim the first set, 25-23. In the second set, there were seven ties and three lead changes until the Cougars used a 5-0 run after trailing 11-10 to take the lead for good in a 25-19 win.

Azusa Pacific put it all together in the third set, rallying from an early 5-3 deficit with six consecutive points to kick off an 18-2 run in the eventual match-clinching 25-11 win. Hinnant recorded five of her team-high 10 kills on her only five attack attempts in the final set, finishing with 10 kills on 14 errorless attempts for a .714 attack percentage.

With seven consecutive wins at home to open PacWest play, Azusa Pacific is now 11-4 overall and holds the early lead in the conference standings with a 7-0 mark. Six of the Cougars' seven conference wins have been three-set sweeps, and Azusa Pacific returns to action with a weekend Bay Area road trip to take on Notre Dame de Namur and Dominican on Sept. 28 and 29.
