Costa Mesa, Calif.-- Azusa Pacific traveled to Vanguard University for a mid-day doubleheader. The Cougars dropped both games to the Lions game one resulted in a late scoring 2-1 final and game twos final score was in favor of the Lions 4-1.
GAME 1: Vanguard University 2, Azusa Pacific 1
In her third start of the season sophomore Kat Ung threw six strikeouts and held the Lions to four-hitless innings.
After a silent four innings for both sides of the field the Cougars Illiana Jimenez led off the fifth inning with a single to centerfield and stole second the first chance she got putting herself in scoring position. Illiana then scored from second off of Kayla Jimenez's RBI single up the middle. The Cougars lead was short lived as the Lions answered back in the bottom of the inning with a RBI sacrifice fly ball up the middle.
As the game entered its final inning the Cougars and Lions were tied 1-1. The Cougars found themselves with two outs, runners on first and second, not able to scratch the winning run. In the bottom of the seventh the Lions placed runners on the corners with no outs then laid down a squeeze bunt to bring in the winning run 2-1.
GAME 2: Vanguard University 4, Azusa Pacific 1
Vanguard was the first team to get on the board, after two scoreless innings by both teams the Lions scored twice in the bottom of the third.
In the top of the fourth Cayla Broussard scored from third off of a Lion error to cut Vanguards lead in half 2-1.
The Lions capitalized on a passed ball to extend their lead to 3-1 in the fifth.
In the bottom of the sixth the Lions had a runner on first with no outs, then the Lions decided to put a bunt down, resulting in a popped up bunt and a double play by Kayla who was playing up on the line. She dove for the popped up bunt for the first out, while still laid out she tossed the ball to first for the second out. With two down the Lions managed to score from third.
The Cougars seventh-inning rally fell short resulting in a 4-1 final.

The Cougars are on the road this weekend as they travel to Tucson, Ariz. to play Lubbock Christian, Western Oregon, Southern Nazarene, and Franklin Pierce in the Cactus Classic Friday and Saturday.
