AZUSA, Calif. – For the third time this season, the Cougars have put together a six-game winning streak.
By virtue of their efficient all-around 90-59 win against Chaminade on Monday evening, Azusa Pacific posted their sixth straight win.
The victory ups the 19th ranked Cougars to 24-3 overall and 15-2 in PacWest games.
HOW IT HAPPENED: A swarming defense and a clean offense were evident from the opening tip. They forced 26 Silverswords (2-16, 2-14) turnovers which translated in a 30-6 advantage in points off turnovers. Moreover, the Cougars were able to run their fast break to precision with 20 points on the break.
On the offensive side of the ball the Cougars had a season low six turnovers. After three quarters, they had just two miscues.
They were constantly running an offense to take advantage of their height underneath the hoop. Azusa Pacific scored 54 of their points from the paint. Two of the top scorers for the Cougars came from the forward position as Casey Wortley and Gabrielle Kaiser recorded 16 and 13 points respectively
DOUBLE-DOUBLE: Savanna Hanson recorded her team high eighth double-double of the season with a 13-point, 10-rebound effort. The sophomore also dished out five assists.
QUOTEABLE: "I am so pleased with how we handled the ball and took care of the ball," head coach T.J. Hardeman said. "One thing Chaminade tries to do is go for a lot of steals and they have been getting them. We talked about taking care of it and we did a good job of that.
"They are undersized so we were really trying to work the ball inside and score. If they decided to double or triple then we did a nice job of kicking the ball out for an open shot."
