SAN DIEGO, Calif. -- Azusa Pacific dropped to 2-2 in PacWest play, after suffering a 69-54 defeat at Point Loma Saturday.
How It Happened: Point Loma posted significant advantages in multiple statistical categories on Saturday. The Cougars turned the ball over 16 times, as Point Loma was able to score 20 points off of those Azusa Pacific miscues. Meanwhile, the Cougars scored just 10 points off of seven turnovers by Point Loma. The Sea Lions were able to create the most separation from the free throw line, as they went 19-for-25 (76 percent) from the charity stripe. The Cougars only shot nine free throws in the entire contest, making seven of those attempts (77.8 percent).
Turning Point: Heading into halftime, the Point Loma lead was in single digits, 38-32. However, Point Loma was able to stretch out the lead in the first ten minutes of the second half. The Sea Lions used a 19-6 run to grab a 57-41 lead with just over ten minutes remaining in the game and maintained a double-digit lead for the remainder of the game.
Azusa Pacific Standouts: Senior guard
Darien McClain was Azusa Pacific's leading scorer and lone player to finish in double figures, as he finished with 10 points. Junior guard
Noah Bundrant finished with nine points on a perfect 3-for-3 shooting from beyond the arc, while also dishing out three assists. Sophomore forward
Gerritt Beetstra had eight points and six rebounds, as he went 2-for-3 from deep. Junior
Selom Mawugbe had a game-high four blocks and also collected nine rebounds.
Point Loma Standouts: The Sea Lions had four players finish in double figures, as Daulton Hommes scored a game-high 19 points, Ben Okhotin had 13 points, Josh Rodriguez finished with 12 points, and Preston Beverly added 11 points. Beverly nearly had a double-double, as he finished the game with nine rebounds.
What's Next: Azusa Pacific is now 5-6 overall and 2-2 in conference play heading into the season's first basketball matchup in the Cornerstone Cup Rivalry Series presented by West Coast Sand & Gravel, a Saturday, Dec. 15 visit to Biola for a 7:30 p.m. tipoff.
