AZUSA, Calif. -- In a first-round game in the NCAA Division II Men's Soccer National Championship West Regional, No. 3-seeded Cal State L.A. defeated No. 6-seeded Chico State by a 2-1 margin in the third matchup this season between the California Collegiate Athletic Association rivals.
Morten Bjoershol scored on a 30-yard free kick with less than eight minutes left in the first half to give Cal State L.A. a 1-0 halftime lead, and Robin Lindahl scored his team-leading 12th goal of the year in the 74th minute to extend the lead to 2-0. David Elizaga assisted Lindahl's goal, which turned out to be the game-winner as Chico State cut the lead to 2-1 in the 87th minute.
Chico State's Garrett Hogbin headed in a corner kick from Alex Fluitt with just over three minutes left, cutting the lead to 2-1 as he scored his fourth goal of the season.
With the win, Cal State L.A. improves to 15-2-3 on the season and advances to a second-round matchup against No. 2-seeded host Azusa Pacific on Saturday, Nov. 10. The teams last faced each other in the same round and same location in 2014, when Cal State L.A. defeated the host Cougars by a 1-0 score. Chico State finishes the season with a 13-6-1 overall record.
