SEATTLE -- The Azusa Pacific women's basketball team fell in disbelief as Western Washington drained a three-point overtime buzzer-beater to hand the Cougars their first loss of the season, 77-74, at the Sodexo Tip-Off Classic hosted by Seattle Pacific.
Savanna Hanson knocked down three crucial free throws with four-tenths of a second left in regulation to send the game to overtime. After falling behind by five points in overtime, Azusa Pacific rallied to tie the game when Rachel Bozlee drained a 3-pointer from the top of the arc to tie the game, 74-74, with 10 seconds left in overtime. Lexie Bland answered with a three-pointer from the left corner that bounced in at the buzzer to give Western Washington the 77-74 win.
The game was tied a total of 11 times, while the lead changed hands 11 times. Two Cougar starters fouled out, with Laura Pranger picking up her fifth foul with 3:19 left in regulation before Savanna Hanson fouled out with 4:13 remaining in overtime. Western Washington controlled the boards by a 52-32 margin.
Savanna Hanson led the Cougars in scoring with 19 points, which included a pair of three-pointers. Hanson also finished a perfect 9-for-9 from the free throw line. Daylee Hanson added 14 points and six rebounds, and Zoe March added in 10 points. Both Lydia Nieto and Samantha Huddleston pitched in nine points apiece.
The Azusa Pacific women's basketball team returns home to the Felix Event Center to host the Azusa Pacific Thanksgiving Classic, which welcomes No. 24-ranked Northwest Nazarene, as well as Biola and Northeastern State (Okla.) for games on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 23-24.
