AZUSA, Calif. -- Cal Poly Pomona claimed its second consecutive NCAA Division II West Region title with a 1-0 victory over No. 2-seeded host Azusa Pacific Thursday night. The No. 5-seeded Broncos scored the game's only goal with less than six minutes left in regulation to advance to Saturday's NCAA Division II Men's Soccer National Championship quarterfinals.
Gabriel Castillo scored the game-winner, with a back-heel setup from Eduardo Faria giving Castillo an opening inside the box for the finish into the back of the net. The goal was Castillo's second of the season.
Both teams generated plentiful scoring chances, with Azusa Pacific posting a 16-14 edge in shots, including five on goal to Cal Poly Pomona's two. However, Broncos goalkeeper Jakob Hansen delivered five saves to post Cal Poly Pomona's third consecutive shutout in NCAA postseason play.
With the win, Cal Poly Pomona improves to 16-6 overall and advances to a national quarterfinal matchup against the South Central Region champion West Texas A&M on Saturday, Nov. 17, at 6 p.m. Pacific time. Azusa Pacific concludes its deepest run in the program's NCAA Division II history with a 17-2-1 overall record.
