Cougars sweep Fresno Pacific for 10th PacWest win

AZUSA, Calif. -- Azusa Pacific maintained its PacWest lead with a dominant three-set sweep of visiting Fresno Pacific Friday night at the Felix Event Center.

The Cougars were led by junior middle blocker Julianne Miller, who finished with 14 kills on 22 attempts, posting a .591 hitting percentage on the match. Along with Miller, a trio of Cougars posted eight kills: senior Natalie Klapp, junior Sara Wagenveld, and freshman Katarina Radisic. Junior Aliyah Morrison also had seven kills for Azusa Pacific's balanced attack. Senior setter Kaylen Higa led the Cougars with 22 assists, and sophomore Sophia Newhouse had a team-high 13 digs.

In the first set, Azusa Pacific took an early 7-2 lead, when Fresno Pacific made a push that brought the score to a 10-9 Cougar advantage. The Cougars then scored six straight points, including three kills from Radisic, which was too much for Fresno Pacific to overcome. Azusa Pacific took the first set 25-17.

Fresno Pacific opened the second set with a 3-1 lead, but the Cougars won the next four points and claimed a lead it would not relinquish for the rest of the set. Miller paced Azusa Pacific in the second set with six kills and a block. Wagenveld also sparked the Cougars in the second set with three kills and a solo block that gave the Cougars the lead for good at 4-3.

The third set proved to be the most competitive, as the Cougars held a three-point advantage at 17-14. The Cougars slowly created separation to close out the match, eventually winning the third set by a 25-18 tally. Miller once again had six kills in the set, while Wagenveld and Klapp each had four kills.

Azusa Pacific moves to 14-5 on the season, and leads the PacWest standings with a 10-1 record in conference play. The Cougars will hit the road for the next four PacWest matchups, beginning with a pair of road matches in the Bay Area against Academy of Art (Oct. 12) and Holy Names (Oct. 13), which are followed by road contests at Point Loma (Oct. 16) and Fresno Pacific (Oct. 20).
