It Only Takes One

AZUSA, Calif. -- The final score did not reflect the degree which Azusa Pacific controlled the game in Saturday's 1-0 victory over Academy of Art, but Callum Wallace's 74th-minute goal lifted the No. 14-ranked Cougars to their ninth consecutive victory.

The goal was Wallace's first of the season, and it was the product of relentless pressure by Azusa Pacific's potent attack, which produced a 29-5 disparity in total shots. Gabriel Costa registered the assist, his 10th straight game either scoring or assisting a goal.

The Cougars improved to 12-1-1 overall and 7-0 in the Pacific West Conference, while Academy of Art falls to 1-10-2 overall, 0-5-1 PacWest.

After producing a 12-2 margin in shots in the first half, Azusa Pacific came out firing again in the second half, peppering Academy of Art goalkeeper Kris Jensson with another 15 shots before Wallace delivered the game-winner with 16:41 to play. Among those chances were a pair of shots off the frame of the goal, as Wallace hit the crossbar in the 56th minute and Costa hit the post just past the 70-minute mark and fired another shot just over the bar on the same extended possession inside the box.

Just minutes later, the Cougars produced a finish into the back of the net with a simple attack from the back. Isaac Bawa controlled a clearance from Academy of Art near midfield began the play from the back left, where it reached Costa along the left sideline. He possessed it from wide left towards the center into the attacking third and put the ball at Wallace's feet just outside the box. Wallace took a quick touch towards goal and delivered a low shot to the left side past Jensson for the game's only goal.

Costa led Azusa Pacific with eight shots, while James Ndubueze fired six shots and Wallace had five. The Cougars produced 13 corner kicks while conceding only one, and goalkeeper Nathanael Linquist registered the shutout after facing five total shots from Academy of Art.

With four regular-season games remaining, Azusa Pacific leads the PacWest standings with a perfect 7-0 mark for 21 points. Second-place Point Loma is 5-2-1 (16 points) and third-place Fresno Pacific is 5-2 (15 points) with two weeks left in the regular season. The Cougars hit the road for a pair of games on artificial-turf fields at Concordia (Oct. 24) and Biola (Oct. 27) before returning home for the final two games of the regular season.
