Early Deficit Too Much To Overcome

Volleyball falls in four sets at Point Loma

SAN DIEGO -- Azusa Pacific lost its second PacWest match of the season Tuesday night, falling in four sets (25-20, 25-19, 18-25, 25-22) to host Point Loma. Senior Natalie Klapp and freshman Katarina Radisic led the Cougars with 11 kills and 10 digs each, with senior Kaylen Higa recording 24 assists on the match.

Point Loma jumped on the Cougars early in the first set, taking an 8-2 lead. After Azusa Pacific pulled within a point at 17-16, the host Sea Lions doubled the Cougars' scoring through the rest of the set to win by a score of 25-20, taking a 1-0 match lead.

The second set was a back and forth battle featuring 10 ties and five lead changed, but Azusa Pacific's final lead (15-14) was answered by an 8-1 Point Loma run. That gave the Sea Lions a 22-16 lead and an eventual 25-19 set victory.

Facing a potential sweep, Azusa Pacific battled back in the third set. Point Loma held a 10-8 advantage until the Cougars recorded four of the next five points, starting with a Radisic kill followed by two kills from Klapp and an attack error by Point Loma. That gave Azusa Pacific a 12-11 edge, and the Cougars never trailed again in the set. Klapp secured the third set for the Cougars with her fifth kill of the set, forcing a fourth set with a 25-18 third-set win.

Point Loma never trailed in the final set, closing out the match by a final of 25-22.

Azusa Pacific falls to 16-6 overall and 12-2 in the PacWest, and the Cougars are now tied with Biola for the conference lead heading into a Saturday afternoon visit to Fresno Pacific on Saturday, October 20 at 3:00 p.m. Following the trip to Fresno, Azusa Pacific returns home for another installment of the Cornerstone Cup, welcoming PacWest co-leader Biola for a Tuesday, October 23 contest at 7:00 p.m.
