AZUSA, Calif. – With all that is on the line, it should come as no surprise that the first game of a four-game PacWest series was in doubt until the final pitch.
Dixie State rallied with a three-run ninth inning to post a 6-4 victory against Azusa Pacific on Monday afternoon.
With the teams battling for not only a conference title but seeding for the NCAA West Regional Championships, the team that wins two of the final three games in the set claims the league title and potentially a higher seed in the playoffs.
After the games completion, the program took a few moments to honor each student-athlete who is playing their final season in a Cougar uniform.
The No. 9 Cougars threatened in both the first and second innings but combined to leave four men on base in those frames as the game remained scoreless. A Trey Kamachi two-out RBI base knock scored Drew McLaughlin in the third stanza to break the deadlock. Azusa Pacific struck right back as Pablo O'Connor and Justin Gomez reached base to start the Cougar (38-9, 25-8 PacWest) portion of the inning. On the second pitch he saw, Adrian Tovalin hit a screamer down the leftfield line and over the fence for his PacWest leading 19th homerun of the season.
Trailing 3-1, the visitors rallied with two outs to tie the score as Miles Bice and Bryce Feist collected RBI base hits in the sixth inning. Once again, the Cougars were quick to respond as Cam Bennett blasted his third homerun of the season with a solo shot over the rightfield wall.
In the eighth stanza the No. 17 Trailblazers (36-10-1, 25-7-1) mounted a serious scoring threat as they put runners on first and third base with just one out. Reliever Mitch Williams induced a tailor made double-play to erase the jam and keep the Cougars in front 4-3.
For the first time in the contest, Dixie State set the Cougars offense down in order in the eighth frame to set-up a dramatic ninth. With one-out the Trailblazers worked back-to-back walks as Drew McLaughlin and Tyler Baker reached the base paths. On a full count Trey Kamachi, the next batter, laced a double into right centerfield to give the visitors a 5-4 lead. A Logan Porter double gave the visitors a two-run cushion with a double of his own.
In the bottom of the ninth the Cougars got a runner on first with two out on a Michael Staudinger single. However, Azusa Pacific couldn't do anymore.
