Softball Splits Regular-Season Finale

IRVINE, Calif. -- Azusa Pacific wrapped up the regular season with a doubleheader split at Concordia, ensuring the Cougars a third-place finish in the Pacific West Conference softball standings after finishing the season with 10 wins in the final 12 games.

With the split, Azusa Pacific concludes the regular season with a 32-18 overall record and finished third in the PacWest with a 23-9 conference record.

Carly Xepoleas picked up the complete-game win while notching five strikeouts in the opener, and Nicki Sprague went four-for-four to lead the Cougars' offense in the nightcap. Led by those efforts, Azusa Pacific's four-player senior class concluded their careers with a strong finish.

Over her final five starts, opponents found it nearly impossible to score on Xepoleas, as the lefthander won all five starts while surrendering just three total runs (two earned) over the 35-inning stretch. She struck out 18 and gave up just one extra-base hit during that span.

Sprague, meanwhile, was arguably the toughest out in the West Region over the final 23 games of the season, as she batted .470 (31-for-66) with 15 runs, 25 RBIs, and 13 walks while striking out just once in her final 84 plate appearances.

Senior centerfielder Abry Moreno was three-for-six on the day, picking up hits in both games including a two-hit game in the opener, modeling the offensive consistency she displayed throughout the year that led to a .336 season batting average. Moreno never had a batting average lower than .308 entering any game this season, and she logged 14 multi-hit games while starting all 50 games in centerfield.

Ariana von Zboray also finished her career on an upward trend, batting .424 (14-for-33) with six doubles, one home run, and nine RBIs over the final 12 games of the season.

GAME 1: Azusa Pacific 3, Concordia 2

Before Azusa Pacific registered its first hit, Illiana Jimenez manufactured the Cougars' first run to take a 1-0 lead. She drew a walk and immediately stole second before advancing to third on a groundout. With Sprague at the plate, Jimenez scored on a wild pitch for the game's first run.

Concordia answered with a run in the bottom of the first, also scoring on a wild pitch to tie the game at 1-1. Erinn Jaramillo broke the 1-1 tie with two outs in the top of the fourth with a solo home run. An inning later, Jimenez scored the eventual game-winning run on Cayla Broussard's two-out infield single in the top of the fifth. After reaching on a fielder's choice which resulted in the second out of the inning, Jimenez stole second and took an extra base on an errant throw from the catcher to second base before scoring a run which gave the Cougars a 3-1 lead at the time.

Concordia cut the lead to 3-2 in the bottom of the fifth, but Xepoleas left two runners on base in each of the final three innings to preserve the victory.

GAME 2: Concordia 5, Azusa Pacific 3

Sprague went four-for-four with an RBI and a stolen base to lead Azusa Pacific's offense, which answered an early 3-0 deficit with single runs in the third and fourth innings. Concordia added a pair of insurance runs in the fifth and took that 5-2 lead into the seventh inning before the Cougar offense came to life again.

Moreno led off the frame with a double to right-center, and Broussard added a one-out single to left-center. Sprague delivered her PacWest and West Region-leading 61st RBI of the year with a base hit up the middle, scoring Moreno from third to cut the lead to 5-3. Kayla Jimenez added a single to left which loaded the bases, but Concordia pitcher BethAnn McCann escaped the bases-loaded jam by getting a popup and a lineout to third to end the game.

Kat Ung tossed five innings of three-hit relief to keep Azusa Pacific in the game after the Cougars fell behind by a 3-0 margin. Ung entered the game with the bases loaded and no outs in the second inning, but she struck out Concordia's leadoff hitter Ryann Ferguson for the first out and got a grounder for a force out at home for the second out. Ung finished off the Eagles in the second with another strikeout, setting down No. 3 hitter Amanda Gjertsen on a called third strike.
