TURLOCK, Calif. -- Azusa Pacific wrapped up the Tournament of Champions with two close games, falling to No. 7-ranked Chico State, 2-1, and No. 2 Humboldt State Saturday afternoon at Pedretti Park in Turlock.
The Cougars kept both Top-10 foes within reach, using a complete-game performance from Kat Ung in the loss to Chico State before Carly Xepoleas and Ariana von Zboray combined to hold Humboldt State's potent offense to four runs on six hits in the 4-1 defeat to the Lumberjacks.
Jenna Gorman led the offense on the day, collecting four hits in five at-bats on the day while gong 5-for-10 overall in the tournament, and Erinn Jaramillo hit a solo home run to break a scoreless tie in the fourth inning against Humboldt State.
The Tournament of Champions wrapped up Azusa Pacific's nonconference schedule, with the Cougars finishing 9-9 in nonconference play to drop to 22-16 overall. The final 12 games of the regular season are in Pacific West Conference play, in which the Cougars currently sit tied for fourth with a 13-7 conference record. The schedule resumes with a four-game weekend series April 7-8 against Dominican, which is tied with Azusa Pacific for fourth in the PacWest.

GAME 1: #7 Chico State 2, Azusa Pacific 1
Ung struck out four and scattered a pair of runs on six hits against Chico State, holding the Wildcats in check after surrendering single runs in the first and third innings. She set down the side in order in the fourth and sixth innings and worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the fifth to keep Chico State off the scoreboard after the third inning.
In the top of the third, Illiana Jimenez and Nicki Sprague both beat out infield singles on short grounders up the first-base line. Sprague's two-out hit put runners on first and third, and she and Jimenez pulled off a successful double steal to draw a throw to second base allowing Jimenez to score from third to tie the game at 1-1.
The situation repeated with two outs in the fifth inning, but Chico State conceded Sprague's steal of second base to keep Jimenez at third before the Wildcats got out of trouble with an inning-ending groundout. The Cougars put runners at first and third again with two outs in the seventh inning, but Chico State pitcher Haley Gilham got another inning-ending grounder to finish off the 2-1 win.
Gorman was 3-for-3 in the defeat, while Jimenez was 2-for-3 with a walk and four steals to lead Azusa Pacific's offense.

GAME 2: #2 Humboldt State 4, Azusa Pacific 1
Xepoleas dueled Humboldt State starter Madison Williams for three scoreless innings before Jaramillo ripped a 1-0 pitch from Williams over the left field fence for a two-out solo home run in the top of the fourth inning. Gorman followed Jaramillo's solo shot with another extra-base hit, a double to left, but Williams notched one of her seven strikeouts to end the inning with the Cougars holding a one-run lead.
Humboldt State answered in the bottom of the fourth, converting a one-out infield single into the tying run on Lona Dengler's RBI double. The Lumberjacks manufactured another run in the fifth, using a leadoff single, wild pitch, and steal to set up a run-producing groundout for a 2-1 lead. HSU added two insurance runs in the sixth on a walk, hit by pitch, two wild pitches, and a run-scoring groundout for the final 4-1 margin.
Xepoleas scattered three runs on six hits, and von Zboray struck out one in one inning of relief. Williams tossed the complete-game win for Humboldt State, surrendering one run on five hits with a pair of walks and seven strikeouts.
