KANEOHE, Hawai'i -- Azusa Pacific picked up a 3-2 extra-innings victory in the opening game of Monday's Pacific West Conference softball doubleheader at Hawai'i Pacific, but the Sharks rallied for a 1-0 win on a walkoff home run in the second game to split Monday's twinbill.
The teams meet again at Howard Okita Field on Tuesday, wrapping up a scheduled four-game series in the Cougars' 10-game road trip to the Hawaiian Islands. With the split, Azusa Pacific is now 13-6 overall and 5-1 in Pacific West Conference play, while Hawai'i Pacific is now 8-4 overall, 3-1 PacWest.

Kayla Jimenez delivered a one-out RBI single in the top of the eighth inning to lift Azusa Pacific to a 3-2 win after the Cougars rallied from a two-run deficit in the seventh to force extra innings.
Senior lefthander Carly Xepoleas dueled with HPU starter Alexa McCoin for five shutout innings before the Sharks scratched out two unearned runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. With two runs already across in the sixth for Hawaii Pacific, and two more on base at second and third with one out, relief pitcher Megan Mejia worked out of the jam to limit the damage.
Nicki Sprague led off the seventh with a double to left center, the first of five consecutive batters to reach safely in the inning after the Cougars had been held to just two hits through the first six innings. Jimenez followed Sprague's extra-base hit with a single up the middle, and Azusa Pacific loaded the bases when Jenna Gorman reached on an error. Erinn Jaramillo singled through the left side to score Sprague, and Emily Moran singled to center to bring Jimenez home with the game-tying run.
In the eighth inning, Illiana Jimenez and Cayla Broussard registered back-to-back infield singles before Kayla Jimenez singled to right to push Azusa Pacific in front, 3-2. Mejia struck out two batters in the bottom of the eighth, registering 2.2 innings of shutout relief to pick up the victory. Kayla Jimenez had three of the Cougars' nine hits in the game.

The second game also featured a pitcher's duel between freshman lefthander Kat Ung and HPU's Emiliee Leonard, who kept the game scoreless until the seventh inning. Azusa Pacific had runners on base in all seven innings but were limited to just four hits by Leonard, while Ung notched four strikeouts and surrendered just four hits until Leonard led off the bottom of the seventh with a walkoff solo home run.
Illiana Jimenez laid down a bunt single in the third inning to extend her hitting streak to a season-long nine games, but Leonard kept the Cougar offense off-balance and scattered four hits and three walks with two strikeouts to post the complete-game shutout for the Sharks. Leonard also had two of HPU's five hits in the game.
