SAN DIEGO – With the schedule winding down, teams are jockeying for position.
Looking to solidify their standing in the PacWest, Azusa Pacific couldn't overcome Point Loma as they dropped an 80-64 road decision on Thursday evening.
With four games left in the regular season, the Cougars sit among the top six teams in the PacWest which would qualify them for the league's postseason tournament (PacWest Standings).
In the opening quarter Azusa Pacific (12-12, 10-6 PacWest) rode a 4-for-7 shooting effort from behind the arc to take a 16-13 lead. Tara Casey led the way with a 3-for-3 effort from behind the arc. As the second frame unfolded the home team began to take control. An Alex Brunk lay-in with 6:13 left until halftime gave Point Loma a 24-22 lead they wouldn't never relinquish. During the last six-plus minutes, the home team held a 16-8 scoring advantage. At the halftime break, the Sea Lions held a 39-30 lead.
During the first two quarters, Point Loma forced the Cougars into 14 turnovers while having just three of their own. The Sea Lions scored 10 points off of Azusa Pacific miscues.
The early minutes of the third quarter saw Azusa Pacific chip away at their deficit. When Zoe March layed-in a bucket after a Point Loma (20-3, 14-2) turnover, the Cougars found themselves down just 45-42 with just over five minutes left in the frame. Unfortunately, Point Loma extended their lead to 10 points before taking a 59-53 lead heading into the final period.
Point Loma put the game away with a 13-4 scoring run to start the final period. Azusa Pacific couldn't get their deficit sown to single digits down the stretch.
Gabrielle Kaiser had a team high 18 points while the duo of Casey and Samantha Huddleston each scored 14 points. Huddleston's total is a career best.
Azusa Pacific closes out their home slate on Saturday when they host Concordia at 1 p.m.
