AZUSA, Calif. -- Senior lefthander Carly Xepoleas tossed a near-perfect gem in the second game of Azusa Pacific's non-conference doubleheader with Cal State San Marcos, securing a split with her complete-game one-hitter in a 2-0 win after the Cougars' seventh-inning Game 1 rally fell short in a 3-2 defeat.
The only hit Xepoleas surrendered was a first-inning bunt single, and she faced just two batters over the minimum of her seven-inning shutout. She only put two other runners on base, hitting a batter with two outs in the fourth inning and issuing a leadoff walk in the sixth, but she never let the CSUSM runners past first base in the game. Xepoleas struck out seven as she registered her second shutout this year.
With the split, Azusa Pacific is now 8-5 overall, and the defending Pacific West Conference champions return to action on Tuesday, Feb. 28, opening PacWest play with a 4 p.m. doubleheader against California Baptist. Cal State San Marcos is now 2-9 overall.
GAME 1: Cal State San Marcos 3, Azusa Pacific 2
Azusa Pacific fell behind early and almost got its offense going just in time to storm back for a victory. Trailing 3-0 heading into the bottom of the seventh, freshman Erinn Jaramillo slammed a one-out home run to left field to cut the lead to 3-1, and four straight batters reached with two outs to bring Nicki Sprague to the plate with the bases loaded.
Ariana von Zboray kept the Cougars alive with a two-out single, and a CSUSM error extended the inning by putting Abry Moreno on base. Illiana Jimenez and Cayla Broussard followed with infield singles to push von Zboray across to cut the lead to 3-2 with Sprague due up. After working the count full, Sprague was called out on strikes to end the game.
Cal State San Marcos notched three consecutive one-out hits to produce its first run in the first inning, and Heather Rygg's solo home run in the fourth inning extended the lead to 2-0. In the top of the fifth inning, Gabriela Arizaga added another solo home run to give CSUSM a 3-0 lead.
GAME 2: Azusa Pacific 2, Cal State San Marcos 0
Thanks to Xepoleas' gem, the Cougars got all the runs they needed in the first two innings of the 2-0 win. In the first inning, Illiana Jimenez drew a leadoff walk, stole second, advanced to third on Broussard's infield single, then scored on a Sprague sacrifice fly to take a 1-0 lead.
In the second inning, Azusa Pacific got an extra run without the benefit of a base hit, putting two runners on base after being hit by pitch, while Cal State San Marcos contributed two errors and a passed ball which helped Emily Moran score with two outs to make it 2-0.
