AZUSA, Calif. – All it took was one big inning early.
The Cougars were up to the morning start time as they knocked home seven runs in the first frame en route to posting a 10-1 victory against Cal State San Bernardino.
Azusa Pacific shrugged off the 10 a.m. start time with no problems – the game time was pushed up do to expected rain in the area. With the triumph, the Cougars swept the four-game set against Cal State San Bernardino in upping their record to 6-1.
A host of player got-in on the hit parade. The offense was paced by Nick Estrella's 3-for-4 contest with two homeruns and three runs scored. Michael Staudinger also had a big fly of his own during his 2-for-4 performance. The lefthander drove-in three runs and scored twice as well.
Kale Morton was strong in his season debut. The lefthander went 6.0 innings where he scattered seven hits and struck out three. He walked just one batter.
During their initial at-bats, the Cougars sent 10 men to plate during a seven-run, four-hit frame. Staudinger's three-run blast highlighted the output. For the second time in the series, Azusa Pacific chased the Coyotes starting pitcher in the first inning.
The solid early inning set the tone of the game. In all but one inning, the Cougars put at least one runner on the base paths. Azusa Pacific crossed the plate a single time each in the third, fifth and seventh stanza's.
Azusa Pacific takes nearly a week off before hosting San Francisco State on Thursday at 2 p.m.
