AZUSA, Calif. – The Cougars were effective and crisp for the start.
Azusa Pacific played one of their most complete matches of the season as they dominated Dominican in three sets (25-13, 25-10, 25-22) on Friday evening.
With the win the Cougars up their record to 18-4 overall and remain in second place in the PacWest with an 11-3 mark. Tomorrow they welcome conference leading and undefeated California Baptist to the Felix Event Center for a 3 p.m. contest.
HOW IT HAPPENED: As a team the Cougars hit .359 which was their fifth best mark of the season.
In the first set the squad hit .533 an followed that with a .419 mark in the second set. The offense cooled in the third set but were more than effective enough to claim the contest in three frames.
Azusa Pacific never trailed until early in the final set.
STATISICALLY SPEAKING: A trio of hitters paced the front row for the Cougars as Julianne Miller (16 kills), Natalie Klapp (10) and Sara Wagenveld (10) each went for double figure kills.
The ball was set great from the duo of Danika Young and Kaylen Higa. Young had 22 assists while Higa distributed 21.
Bailey Henington help limit the Penguins (9-14, 8-7 PacWest) attack as she had a match high 18 digs.
QUOTEABLE: "I think we controlled the ball from the first contact," said head coach Chris Keife. "Danika did a great job distributing the offense from her setter spot. It was one of her best matches she has had at Azusa Pacific."
About tomorrow vs. No. 3 California Baptist "I think our girls will be ready to go tomorrow. We struggled a bit in our first match against them. I'm just looking forward to tomorrow and having a chance against a really good team."
