ORANGE, Calif. – The NCAA basketball season has begun.
Using an engulfing defense and well distributed offense, the Azusa Pacific women's basketball squad started the season with a 105-79 win against Wisconsin-Parkside on Friday morning.
The two squads played the first official NCAA basketball game against any division and either gender. The contest was a part of the NCAA Division II Tip-Off Classic.
HOW IT HAPPENED: Azusa Pacific took the early in the opening stanza and never gave-up that edge. They grew that lead to as large as a 28 point during the ladder portions of the third quarter.
The Cougars forced the Wisconsin-Parkside into 25 turnovers which they turned into 28 points. Conversely the Azusa Pacific offense had just nine turnovers.
Underneath the hoop the Cougars also dominated. They held a 42-20 edge for points in the paint while holding a 54-45 rebounding edge. Azusa Pacific grabbed 25 offensive rebounds as they outscored the Ranger 20-10 in second chance points.
SPREADING THE OFFENSE AROUND: Five different players scored in double figures led by Gabrielle Kaiser's and Tara Casey's 22-point efforts. Casey hit six of her 13 shots from behind the arc to aid in her career high day while Kaiser went 11-for-23 from the floor in just 23 minutes of action.
Samantha Huddleston came off the bench to score 16 points while Savanna Hanson posted a double-double in her first game with the Cougars. The sophomore scored 15 points and grabbed 11 rebounds while swiping three steals.
Casey Wortley rounded out the double digit scorers with a 10-point performance. Zoe March ran the point and dished out nine assists without committing a turnover.
100 POINT EFFORT: By scoring in the triple digits, the Cougars hit the 100-point mark for the first time since late during the 2015-16 season when they scored 103 in a home win against Concordia.
WHAT'S NEXT: The Cougars continue their three games in three-days on Saturday with a 6:15 p.m. tip-off against Wayne State (Neb.).
