BELMONT, Calif. – What a thrilling way to end the best regular season in the NCAA era.
Azusa Pacific came back from two sets down to post a 3-2 (23-25, 21-25, 25-19, 25-20, 15-8) win against Notre Dame de Namur on Saturday afternoon.
With the win the Cougars end the regular season with a 22-6 overall record and a 15-5 mark in PacWest games. In the five seasons Azusa Pacific has been an NCAA member, both the overall and league wins are program bests.
HOW IT HAPPENED: After dropping a pair of nip-and-tuck opening sets, the Cougars put themselves in position for a rally with a strong third set. They posted 16 kills in the frame while the home notched 11. Furthermore they had seven total errors while the Argonauts had eight.
In the fourth stanza the Cougars were down 11-7 put rallied to take the lead for good at 16-15. Azusa Pacific continued to build that lead to force a decisive set. In that final set the Cougars won the first four points and never looked back. Notre Dame de Namur never got their deficit within a workable margin. In that fifth frame the Cougars hit .348 while the Argonauts (17-11, 12-8) hit in the negative numbers
INSIDE THE BOXSCORE
- Julianne Miller had a career high 24 kills to pace the Cougars offense
- Sara Wagenveld chipped in a 15-kill evening with Natalie Klapps (13) an Madison Ogas rounded out the double figure kill producers
- Kaylen Higa was solid from the setter spot with another double-double. She had a season high 39 assists while notching 15 digs
- Bailey Henington tallied a match high 38 digs
RALLY FROM 0-2: In pulling off the comeback, the Cougars rallied from an 0-2 deficit for the second straight season. Last year, they pulled off the feat in a road contest at Fresno Pacific.
