Cougars Fall After Late Chill

MONMOUTH, Ore. -- Azusa Pacific went cold from the floor in the second half of its second game of the Western Oregon/Doubletree by Hilton D2 Shootout, falling to Eastern New Mexico, 86-70, Saturday afternoon.

For the second straight game, a one-point game at halftime got away from the Cougars in the second half, as Azusa Pacific shot just 30 percent (10-for-33) from the floor after halftime as Eastern New Mexico steadily pulled away throughout the second half.

Will Ferris scored a season-high 16 points to lead the Cougars, who fell to 3-2 on the year with the defeat.

How It Happened: Ferris hit a short jumper in the lane to give Azusa Pacific a 31-24 lead with 4:32 left in the opening half, but Eastern New Mexico finished the half on a 10-4 run to trim the Cougars' halftime edge to a single point, 35-34. Although Ferris hit a three-pointer to open the second half, the Greyhounds responded with a 16-4 flurry to take a 50-42 lead with 14:26 to play.

A minute later, Ferris hit another three-pointer, pulling Azusa Pacific within three, 50-47, but Eastern New Mexico never surrendered the lead again. A Ben Taufahema three with 8:35 left made it a five-point game, cutting the lead to 62-57, but the Greyhounds scored the next six points to take their first double-digit lead, and the Cougars never got closer than nine points the rest of the way.

Turning Point: After Ferris pulled his team within three, 50-47, with 13:25 left, Zach Parker responded with a three of his own and converted three free throws on the next possession when he was fouled on another long-range attempt. Parker's six-point outburst extended the Greyhounds' lead to nine, 56-47.

Azusa Pacific Standouts: Ferris scored 11 of his season-high 16 points in the second half, and he was joined in double figures by Corey Langerveld and Mandrell Worthy, who scored 11 points each. Petar Kutlesic scored 9 points and pulled in a team-high 8 rebounds, and Selom Mawugbe blocked 3 shots to lead Azusa Pacific's defense.

Eastern New Mexico Standouts: Andre Hughes came off the bench for a productive 18-point, 12-rebound double-double in just 22 minutes of action, and Lamarquis Thompson led the Greyhounds with a game-high 21 points. Thompson was 7-of-8 from the field, hitting a three-pointer while going 6-for-6 from the free throw line, and he added 7 rebounds and 4 assists.

By The Numbers: Azusa Pacific committed a season-low 9 turnovers, but Eastern New Mexico protected the basketball even better, giving away just 7 turnovers… ENMU posted a 41-34 rebounding margin over the Cougars and shot 52 percent (29-for-56) for the game… Eastern New Mexico did not attempt a three-pointer in the first half and went 3-for-7 from long range in the second half… The Greyhounds made 25-of-30 free throws (83 percent).

What's Next: Another three-game week awaits Azusa Pacific, which visits Cal State San Marcos on Tuesday, Nov. 21, before wrapping up non-conference play with two games at the Point Loma Thanksgiving Classic on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 24-25.
