Five Straight for Azusa Pacific

AZUSA, Calif. – It wasn't always pretty but the Cougars got the desired result.

Azusa Pacific overcame some foul trouble and turnovers with solid defense as they posted a 65-54 win against Cal State Dominguez Hills on Saturday afternoon. The win culminated the PacWest/Challenge for the Cougars with a pair of wins. Last night Azusa Pacific beat Cal Poly Pomona 75-72.

Fellow PacWest member Point Loma also went undefeated as they beat Cal State Dominguez (97-72) and Cal Poly Pomona (77-67).

HOW IT HAPPENED: The 16th ranked Cougars (5-0) never trailed in the contest. They built a double-digit lead just before the midway point of the second quarter and the closest the Toros (0-2) got was eight points early in the fourth quarter.

Cal State Dominguez Hills made just four of their 35 field goal attempts in the first half but managed to stay somewhat close because of their 10-for-16 effort from the foul line. At halftime, Azusa Pacific held a 31-18 lead.

While the Cougars committed 21 turnovers in the contest, Cal State Dominguez Hills couldn't take any advantage. The Toros finished the game with a 21.7 percent (15-for-69) shooting percentage. Cal State Dominguez went just 2-for-17 from behind the arc while the Cougars drained eight of their 19 shots from deep.
