AZUSA, Calif. – With first-place in the PacWest, as well as a possible playoff spot, on the line California Baptist made a first half goal stand-up.
California Baptist needed only one shot on goal as they posted a 1-0 win against Azusa Pacific on Thursday evening.
It is the fourth straight season the squad's have played a game with either one or no goals scored.
HOW IT HAPPENED: In the 20th minute Hoku Afong scored her second goal of the season. Afong put a knee on the ball inside the six-yard box after a from Jordan Dow put her in position for the net-finder. It was the only shot on frame the visitors had.
Azusa Pacific put two shots on frame as Kennedy Christie (40th minute) and Brooke Gower (85th) make Lancer goalkeeper Sara Escobedo make saves.
IMPLICATIONS: The win lifts California Baptist (9-4, 7-1 PacWest) into first-place by themselves in the PacWest. With five games left they hold the inside track, as well, for the conference's automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament.
Azusa Pacific (6-4-2, 6-1-2) needs outside help to win back-to-back titles and earn a third straight trip to the postseason. The loss also ended the Cougars 18-game unbeaten streak in PacWest play.
With California Baptist transitioning to NCAA Division I after this season, this is most likely the last meaningful these rivals will play.
