Strong Finish Gives Cougars Win

LAIE, Hawaii – A late game push help offset a rough offensive day.

A harsh shooting afternoon didn't deter the desired result as Azusa Pacific posted a 56-47 win against BYU-Hawaii to close out their three-game swing through the Islands.

The Cougars end their journey with two wins as their record moves to 7-8 overall and 5-2 in PacWest games heading into next Thursday's home game with rival and nationally ranked California Baptist.

Despite shooting 32.8 percent (20-for-61) from the field, Azusa Pacific outscored the Seasiders by 13 points in the fourth quarter to pull away for the win. During those final 10 minutes the Cougars nailed seven of their 13 field goal attempts.

"We battled hard for this win. It just took a while to get going offensively. We kept grinding away despite not being as efficient offensively as we would have liked. I'm proud of how we never quit; especially have played a three games in six days," said head coach T.J. Hardeman.

Tara Casey scored in double figures for the eighth time this season to lead the Cougar offense. The junior scored 14 points; bolstered by hitting half of her eight shots from behind the arc. In her first collegiate start, Samantha Huddleston nearly posted the squad's first double-double of the season with a nine-point, eight-rebound effort.

"Sam stepped up and played well. Tara's shooting for us was extremely important," Hardeman said. "Since we were shorthanded, I'm really pleased with how they stepped up today."

Mirja Beckman also provided a good spark as she came off the bench to score a career high nine points in 21 minutes.

Despite their shooting woes, the Cougars led for most of the game. However, the Seasiders (6-7, 3-4) made the visitors sweat out the victory. BYU-Hawaii made a third quarter scoring run as they took a four-point lead (40-36) into the last period.

As Azusa Pacific found its offensive rhythm in the final 10 minutes, they kept their strong defense presence going. They allowed the home team to make just two field goal as they held them to seven points in aiding in their solid final stanza. For the game BYU-Hawaii connected on just 18 of their 63 (28.3 percent) shots from the field.
