AZUSA, Calif. – The teams nearly in the hit the century mark in the wrong category.
In a game that featured 99 shots from the foul line Azusa Pacific persevered despite a game that lack a consistent flow to post a 97-93 double overtime victory against Dominican.
"I can't say enough about how proud of how we battled through the adversity this afternoon," head coach T.J. Hardeman said. "There were certainly times we could have folded and gave into the adversity but we didn't and I believe that speaks to the type of squad we have."
Each team had four players foul out as Dominican was whistled for 34 fouls while Azusa Pacific was charged with 30. The Cougars went 33-for-49 from the foul line – just two made free throws away from the school record set in 2001. Dominican went to the charity stripe on 50 occasions making 29 of their attempts.
In addition to their season high free throw numbers, Azusa Pacific (10-10, 8-4 PacWest) set 2016-17 highs for points, team rebounds (62), field goal attempts (86) and blocked shots (10).
Entering the game the Cougars had recorded two double-doubles all season. On Saturday afternoon, three players tallied the milestone stat. Gabrielle Kaiser scored 25 points and grabbed 12 rebounds. The junior also swatted away five shots. Both Casey Worley and Samantha Huddleston each had 13 rebounds and 10 points. Abigail Goodsell tied Kaiser for team high honors before fouling out after 40 minutes on the court.
Alyssa Lorenzo came off the bench for Dominican (11-10, 7-7 PacWest) to lead all scorers with 32 points. Sandra Ikeora recorded her PacWest leading 13th double-double with a 15-point, 17-rebound game.
The Cougars took the opening quarter lead in large part because of a solid defensive effort. Azusa Pacific forced the Penguins into eight turnovers which they turned into a seven points as they took an 18-12 lead after the opening stanza. Conversely, Dominican scored just two points off of turnovers.
Dominican threaten to take the lead with a scoring spree midway through the second period. However, on four consecutive possessions the Cougars nailed a three-point attempt to push ahead their advantage to 34-24 with 2:31 left until halftime. Unfortunately those would be the final points the home team would score and the Penguins completed the period with 10 straight points as the score was knotted 34-34 at the halftime break.
During the second half Dominican took the lead and the fouls starting to pile-up. After the first half the squad combined for 19 fouls, during the next 20 minutes of play the teams were called for 29. In the two overtime periods there were 17 total fouls. Furthermore, all but six of the Cougar free throws came after halftime.
As time ticked away in regulation, Azusa Pacific overcame a three-point deficit with just over 90 seconds left. They took a 74-73 lead with 15 seconds remaining when Kaiser hit the second of two free throws. On the Penguins ensuing possession, Carly Holboke converted one of her two free throws to send the game into extra session.
In a wild first overtime, half of the 24 total points came from the charity stripe. Azusa Pacific overcame a technical foul on the bench and a three-point deficit to force another overtime. Kaiser, once again, hit one of two foul shots late to extend the contest.
Just like the first overtime, 50 percent of the 18 combined points came from the foul line. Azusa Pacific never trailed in the second extra session and sealed the game in the last 10 seconds by making three of their foul free throws.
The Cougars have a two-day turnover ahead of them as they host Chaminade on Monday at 5:30 p.m.
