IRVINE, Calif. - The Azusa Pacific University volleyball team fell to Simon Fraser University 3-0 (25-14, 25-17, 25-12) Saturday evening, wrapping up the Cougars' four-match weekend at the Labor Day Classic hosted by Concordia University.
The Cougars started well in the first set with a 4-2 lead, but Simon Fraser went on a big run and took a 14-7 edge in taking control of the set. In the second and third frames the sceniro was similar. Simon Fraser took command after a few points in each stanza as they swept the match.
A youthful Cougar roster was led by a pair of freshmen Saturday evening. Sara Wagenveld led the offense with seven kills, while not far behind her with six was Julianne Miller, who also has established herself as a reliable source of kills.
Bailey Henington led the Cougars with 16 digs on the contest, and senior Ashley Midland contributed six digs and a team-high three blocks.
Azusa Pacific returns to action next week with four matches at the D2 West Region Volleyball Showcase in Carson, Calif. The Cougars' opening match is against Montana State University Billings on Thursday, Sept. 8 at 4:30 p.m.
