BELMONT, Calif. – The Cougars had a good finishing touch on Saturday.
After a rough start to their match against Notre Dame de Namur, the Cougars did more than enough in the later stages to post a 3-1 (29-31, 29-27, 25-17, 25-17) victory in the PacWest match-up.
Julianne Miller had a team high 17 kills while hitting .361 to help pace the Azusa Pacific offense. Senior Ashley Midland was nearly as effected with 12 kills and a .423 hitting percentage.
Rounding out the double figure kill producers for Azusa Pacific were Natalie Klapp and Ally Gonzalez who each tallied 10. For Klapp she tallied her fifth double-double of the season with 23-dig performance.
Danika Young directed the offense with 28 assists while also notching a double-double with a 12-dig effort. Baily Hennington had a team high 26 digs.
In the opening set each team had the opportunity to take the early lead before the home squad closed it out. Azusa Pacific had three chances to seize it but Notre Dame de Namur won the stanza on their third set point. The second set unfolded in similar fashion. The Argonauts fought off Azusa Pacific's first set point and eventually had one of their own. A persistent Cougar squad tied the match at a set each on their third set point.
The final two sets gave the Cougars some breathing room. Azusa Pacific raced out to a 10-3 lead and never relented in taking control the match in the third set win. During the frame, the offense had 13 kills and just two errors for a .314 team hitting mark.
As good as the third set was offensively for Azusa Pacific, the final stanza was even better. The Cougars hit .361 (17 kills, 4 errors) as a team to aid in the clinching set win. With the set tied 10-10, Azusa Pacific all but sealed the win by winning 11 of the next 13 points.
After starting the season with 12 straight matches away from the Felix Event Center, the Cougars hosted Chaminade on Wednesday, Sept. 28 in their home opener.
