GLENDORA, Calif. -- Big plays in the passing game lifted No. 15-ranked Azusa Pacific to a 64-14 win over Simon Fraser as the Cougars produced 347 yards and six touchdowns through the air.
Quarterbacks Andrew Elffers and Chad Jeffries split time under center and threw three touchdowns each, as Elffers completed 12-of-16 for 168 yards while Jeffries went 6-for-11 for 188 yards. Redshirt freshman Brandon Jackson was the biggest beneficiary, hauling in three of the scoring receptions in a five-catch, 106-yard performance.
"Our quarterbacks really trust the receivers, and we have a lot of confidence in ourselves, so we expected this type of outcome today," Jackson said. "We prepared really hard during the week in practice, and we don't let things get to us. We're a resilient team, and that's what we've shown week in and week out."
Jackson's first touchdown was a 22-yard connection with Elffers, and he had scoring receptions of 28 and 35 yards from Jeffries in the second quarter. Fellow redshirt freshman Weston Carr also went over 100 receiving yards and produced an 85-yard score early in the second quarter before finishing with three catches for 120 yards.
In all, nine different receivers tallied a catch, and senior tight end Josiah Thropay and redshirt freshman Darrell Adams Jr. added touchdown receptions for the Cougars, who finished with 489 yards total offense while holding Simon Fraser to just 182 yards on the night.
"I appreciate the hard work our players put in, and their approach that this game wasn't about who we played, it's about how we played," Azusa Pacific head coach Victor Santa Cruz said. "The team really had a business mindset all week, and I know they're not satisfied because they realize they have tougher competition still to come."
While the final 64-point tally was four points shy of the program's all-time single-game scoring record and fourth-best all-time, it was the Cougars' highest scoring total in a Division II game since Azusa Pacific joined NCAA Division II in 2012. The 50-point margin of victory was also the program's best against a Division II foe.
Simon Fraser scored on its opening possession, turning a fumbled kickoff return into a 40-yard touchdown drive for a 7-0 lead just 80 seconds into the game. However, Azusa Pacific reeled off 64 consecutive points in a span of less than 40 minutes as LeAndre Jefferson capped Azusa Pacific's scoring by registering a safety on a tackle for loss with 1:32 left in the third quarter.
"I'm proud of the defense for the way they responded from the opening drive, and the offense took control of things as the passing game opened up for us," Santa Cruz said.
Senior placekicker Jamie Cacciatore drilled field goals of 38 and 42 yards to go along with the Cougars' seven offensive touchdowns. Azusa Pacific also scored on special teams, when Faafouina Sitagata blocked a Simon Fraser punt which was recovered in the end zone by Kenny Norton III for another Cougar touchdown.
The defense registered nine sacks for 82 yards, resulting in a game rushing total of minus-44 yards for Simon Fraser, which was limited to just 182 yards of total offense. Junior strong safety Taliuaki Suliafu was credited for 1.5 sacks, and he notched a team-high 4.0 tackles for loss along with one of two Cougar interceptions.
Azusa Pacific answered the early SFU score with Cacciatore's 38-yard field goal followed by Jackson's first touchdown reception to give the Cougars a 10-7 lead after the first quarter. Cacciatore added the 42-yarder in the second quarter between four more touchdowns as Azusa Pacific cruised to a 41-7 halftime lead with 31-point quarter. The second quarter included two more Jackson scores, plus a one-yard rushing score for Aaron Baltazar along with Carr's 85-yard hookup with Jeffries.
The second half opened with the punt block and recover for touchdown to extend the lead to 48-7, and Adams Jr. and Thropay added third-quarter TDs to round out the Azusa Pacific scoring.
WHAT'S NEXT: Azusa Pacific is back on the road for another two weeks before its next return to Southern California for an Oct. 15 clash against Humboldt State. The Cougars visit Western Oregon next week.
