Falcons Grab Three Set Win

IRVINE, Calif. – Trying to rally for a second straight match wasn't meant to happen.

From the first serve the Cougars were behind the proverbial eight-ball and couldn't rally as Seattle Pacific recorded a 3-0 (25-16, 25-22, 25-18) win.

Friday's second match for the Cougars at the Labor Day Classic at Concordia unfolded in similar fashion to the first. While Azusa Pacific bounced back from an early hole against Colorado Christian to force a fifth game, the bounce back wasn't to be in the final match of the day.

Trying to mix-and-match their most successful options, the Cougars played everyone in uniform. Offensively the Cougars recorded 32 kills but also notched 28 errors on their 115 attempts. Sara Wagenveld's six kills were a team beset. The trio of Natalie Klapp, Ashley Midland and Julianne Miller each had five kills.

Along the backlines Bailey Henington tied for match high honors with 12 digs.

Seattle Pacific took the lead from the opening serve and despite the Cougars best efforts, never let them hold a lead. In the second set, the Cougar found themselves down 12-5 but were able to respond and tie the score at 21-21. However that was as close as they would come as the Falcons took a two set lead.

The visitors from the Evergreen State raced out to an 8-3 lead and never let the Cougars within three points the rest of the stanza in sweeping the match.

The Cougars will play at 11 a.m. on Saturday against UC San Diego, an NCAA Championships participant last season.
