AZUSA, Calif. – The opportunity was there for a third straight win but the performance wasn't ideal. Â
Not being able to find the offensive spark they've had the past two games, Azusa Pacific fell to Cal Poly Pomona 1-0 on Tuesday evening.
The contest marked the end of non-conference play for the Cougars.
Looking to build on the momentum that back-to-back four goal wins can bring, Azusa Pacific was flat in Tuesday's contest despite having an edge in shots (10-9) and corner kicks (10-4).
Postgame Interview with head coach Jason Surrell
Sydney Yates put the only tally on the scoreboard in the 15th minute. The sophomore dribbled down the left side of the field unimpeded before firing a shot to the upper half of the net from 10 yards out.
Early in the second half, Azusa Pacific (2-2-1) created a handful of opportunities from set pieces but couldn't convert on those chances.
Cal Poly Pomona had an excellent chance to add to their lead midway through the second half. Hailey James took a free kick from 20 yards out which forced Cougar goal keeper Sarah Klinkenberg to make a diving save.
With just under 18 minutes left the freshman duo of Brittny Maze and Emmy Koflanovich had a nice give-and-out inside the box but Cal Poly Pomona (1-2-1) goal keeper Ricki Ives made the block. It proved to be the best chance down the stretch for Azusa Pacific.
The Cougars will host former Golden State Athletic Conference foe Westmont on Saturday evening at 7 p.m. in an exhibition contest.
