Cougars Edged By Quinnipiac

AZUSA, Calif. -- Azusa Pacific's season-best score came up a point short of a victory Tuesday evening as fourth-ranked Quinnipiac rallied from losing each of the first three events to win the final three and post a winning margin of 1.21 points over the fifth-ranked Cougars.

Azusa Pacific continued making strides in the overall score, improving on its season-best for the third straight meet by registering a total score of 283.390, but Quinnipiac executed the heavily-weighted team event for an additional boost past the Cougars to finish with 284.600 points. The Bobcats' only lead in the meet was at the very end, as Azusa Pacific posted three perfect-10 heats in the first half of action.

A trio of Azusa Pacific seniors contributed to all three perfect-10 heats, as Kirsten Ferramola,Triana Leal, and Emily Sanchez were all involved in the compulsory pyramid, compulsory toss, and twisting pyramid groups which registered perfect scores. Senior Jamie Montgomeryadded the Cougars' top tumbling score with her 9.75 performance in the open tumbling pass.

The Cougars took a 1.70-point combined edge through the first three events, winning all four compulsory heats, all three acro heats, and two of three pyramid heats. Quinnipiac turned things around by winning all three heats of the toss event, making up six-tenths of a point before gaining another half-point in tumbling. Each of Quinnipiac's three individual tumbling passes scored 9.55 or better to send the teams into the team event separated by just six-tenths of a point.

The start values for both performances were nearly identical, but Quinnipiac posted a score of 102.50 to Azusa Pacific's 100.69, completing the comeback victory for the Bobcats, who improved to 5-2 on the season.

Azusa Pacific dropped to 3-2 heading into a Thursday evening tri-meet with Hawai'i Pacific and Fairmont State, which begins at 6:30 p.m. at the Felix Event Center. The regular season concludes on Monday, April 4, when the Cougars host four-time NCATA national champion University of Oregon.
