AZUSA, Calif. – A tale of two halves.
UC San Diego used deadly accuracy in the final two quarters to aid in their 87-77 win against the Cougars.
Azusa Pacific concludes their season at 28-4 while UC San Diego moves onto the West Regional Championship game where they will face Alaska Anchorage on Monday evening at 7 p.m.
The fourth seeded Tritons outscored Azusa Pacific by 18 points during the final two quarters to overcome a 12-point first quarter deficit. During a 20 minute stretch UC San Diego connected on nine of 12 three-pointers. They were an opportunistic team on run outs as they posted a 14-2 edge in fast break points.
UC San Diego was led by Farrah Shokoor's 25-point, 10-rebound effort. Jamie Katuna added impressive 22 points for the visitors.
In their final games in a Cougar uniform Kelly Hardeman and Cydnie Jones scored 24 and 22 points respectively to pace their team.
A strong shooting opening quarter put the Cougars in prime position for the win. During the initial 10 minutes Azusa Pacific connected on 11 of their 20 field goal attempts (55 percent) as they jumped out to a 27-15 lead. UC San Diego trimmed the home team's lead by limiting the Cougars to just four made baskets in the second quarter. At the intermission Azusa Pacific was in front 38-30 with Hardeman scoring 13 points while playing all but one minute.
UC San Diego started the third quarter by making five of their first seven shots while the Cougars missed six consecutive jumpers as the Tritons went in front 50-42. The Tritons continued to push an energetic offensive pace as they outscored Azusa Pacific by 17 points in taking a 65-56 lead into the final quarter.
The Tritons continued to hold their lead in the final quarter. Azusa Pacific pulled as close as seven points on four occasions until the final 90 seconds. Down 79-73 with a minute left the Cougars had a possession to pull closer but couldn't get the ball in the hoop. That was the home team's last gasp.
