GLENDORA, Calif. -- At risk of a letdown performance after clinching the 2016 Great Northwest Athletic Conference football title a week ago, No. 13-ranked Azusa Pacific put the finishing touch on a perfect GNAC campaign with a 33-8 win over Western Oregon.
With the victory, the Cougars improve to 9-1 overall and wrap up GNAC play with a perfect 8-0 mark heading into next week's non-conference visit to Colorado Mesa to wrap up the regular season.
Another dominant defensive performance stole the show, especially in the first half, as Azusa Pacific raced to a 20-0 halftime edge. The Cougars held Western Oregon to zero net passing yards in the first half on 1-of-10 passing, and limited the Wolves to just 29 yards of total offense and just two first downs on 22 first-half plays.
The first eight Western Oregon drives resulted in punts, and WOU missed consecutive field goal attempts before its offense scored its only points of the year against the Cougar defense with less than five minutes to play when Paul Revis turned a short reception from Nick Duckworth into a 70-yard touchdown with 4:41 remaining.
Jason Schwartz notched his GNAC-leading ninth sack, leading the Cougars to five sacks and seven total tackles for loss, and senior linebacker Sam Flemming added his third interception of the season to give Azusa Pacific's defense a Division II-best 22 interceptions this season. Sophomore linebacker Aaron Berry registered a team-high nine tackles, including one of the unit's seven tackles for loss.
The offense was nearly as impressive, as junior quarterback Andrew Elffers engineered three touchdown drives in the first four offensive possessions by completing 15 of his first 18 passing attempts before finishing the game 20-for-27 with 177 yards while adding another 36 rushing yards on 12 carries. Elffers threw for one touchdown and ran for another, and senior quarterback Chad Jeffries also guided a pair of scoring drives with an efficient 6-for-8 passing performance for 128 yards and two touchdowns.
Nine different players caught a pass, as Ethan Zeidler finished with 97 yards on four catches including a 46-yard catch from Jeffries which he tipped to himself over the defender before regaining control as he crossed the goal line to extend the lead to 20-0 with 7:07 left in the second quarter. Redshirt freshman wide receiver Brandon Jackson had six catches for 82 yards, while senior wide receiver Tanner Henry added three catches for 67 yards and a touchdown.
Azusa Pacific marched 76 yards on 12 plays on the opening possession, as Elffers found Josiah Thropay for a two-yard touchdown and an early 7-0 lead. Following back-to-back three-and-outs for the Western Oregon offense, Elffers guided the Cougars 75 more yards on 12 plays again, resulting in a one-yard touchdown run for Aaron Baltazar to push the lead to 13-0 with 10:53 left in the second quarter.
With Jeffries under center for the next offensive series, it took just three plays to generate another touchdown score, this time a 60-yard drive capped by Zeidler's 46-yard scoring grab. Azusa Pacific added a 14-play, 80-yard drive which took 7:09 off the clock before Elffers scored on a five-yard keeper to make it 27-0 with 13:38 to play. The final score for the Cougars was a nine-yard touchdown pass from Jeffries to Henry, who made a 52-yard reception just prior to his scoring catch.
Over a quarter of Western Oregon's offense came from its only scoring play, as the Wolves produced all but 83 of their 235 yards of total offensive in the final quarter.
WHAT'S NEXT: Azusa Pacific wraps up the regular season with a non-conference visit to Colorado Mesa, which improved to 8-2 on the year with a 48-38 win over South Dakota School of Mines on Saturday.
