SAN DIEGO – During their first two seasons as official NCAA members, Azusa Pacific has enjoyed tremendous success in the opening weekend against the California Collegiate Athletic Association. In trying to sweep a pair of CCAA for a third straight year, the Cougars came up short.
Azusa Pacific fell to Cal Poly Pomona 67-56 to conclude the PacWest/CCAA Challenge hosted by Point Loma. It is the first loss in the opening weekend two-game event for the Cougars, who were playing it for the third time.
Azusa Pacific's shooting woes were both inside and outside the arc in the defeat. They went 10-for-24 inside the three-point line but nailed just 25 percent (9-for-36) of their shots from distance. At the charity stripe they were 9-of-13.
While Cal Poly Pomona wasn't much more successful, they went to the foul line 25 times where they made 21. From the field they went 20-for-54 (37 percent).
Neither team had much of advantage in the low scoring contest until the later stages. Azusa Pacific held their biggest lead of the game at 24-15 early in the second quarter after a Tara Casey jump shot. Cal Poly Pomona rallied during the final minutes of the frame to take a two-point edge (35-33) at intermission.
Most of the third frame was a see-saw affair until the Broncos used a spurt in the final minutes. With the Cougars holding a tenuous 40-38 lead, Cal Poly Pomona finished the final five minutes of the quarter on a 12-3 scoring run to take a seven-point edge entering the final stanza.
During that final 10 minutes the Broncos stretched that lead to 11 points twice. Azusa Pacific attempted to rally down the stretch but couldn't pull closer than six points.
For the second straight game Abigail Goodsell, who was named to the all-tournament team, led the scoring effort for the Cougars. She scored 16 points and handed out a team best five assists. The tandem of Gabrielle Kaiser (14) and Zoe March (12) rounded out the double figure scorers.
Azusa Pacific is back to the hardwood on Tuesday night when they travel to Cal State L.A. for a 5:30 p.m. tip-off with another CCAA foe.
