Cougars Control Championship Destiny

HONOLULU, Hawaii – A win that wasn't pretty but the result is all that mattered.

The Cougars scored the game's lone goal late to grab a 1-0 victory against Chaminade on a sunny and wet Saturday afternoon.

The win allows the Cougars to hold down first-place in the PacWest. With one league game remaining they hold a 9-1-2 league mark (29 points). Should Azusa Pacific win their season finale against Point Loma next Saturday afternoon they have the prime position to win the league title and qualify for the NCAA Championships. California Baptist could tie the Cougars but based on the goal differential tiebreaker, Azusa Pacific would win.

Post Game Comments from head coach Jason Surrell

With Saturday's result Azusa Pacific remains unbeaten in their last 10 games. During the opening moments the Silverswords were the aggressor. The home team took eight of the first 10 shots; including four that forced Cougar goal keeper Sarah Klinkenberg to make a save.

The Cougars looked to have finally broke through with just under 18 minutes left. Hayley Arft's free kick from just inside midfield hooked brilliantly to the far post where Lindsey Ryals headed it into the back of the cage. However, the senior was deemed offside.

Azusa Pacific got their goal in the 75th minute when Victoria Kovatch scored her third goal of the year. The senior took a feed from Kelsey Bushman before depositing the ball behind Chaminade goal keeper Brandee Lane.

The last 45 minutes saw the Cougars outshoot Chaminade 7-1 while taking all four of the stanza's corner kicks.

The shutout win is the fourth all-time for the Cougars against Chaminade in four meetings.

In addition to being the last regular season game on Saturday, it will also be senior day for the Cougars. The large grouping of Hayley Arft, Allyn Brown, Courtney Camden, Sarah Klinkenberg, Victoria Kovatch, Madeline Monreal, Lindsey Ryals, Mikaela Truckey and Haley Williamson will be honored prior to the game.
