HILO, Hawaii – It was a next level night for Julianne Miller.
The freshman continued her stellar season as she paced the Cougars to a 3-1 win (25-18, 26-24, 18-25, 25-18) against Hawaii Hilo.
Azusa Pacific closed out their Hawaii matches with two wins in three contests. Over the last two seasons the Cougars have combined to post a 5-1 mark.
The outstanding first-year campaign of Miller went to a new level on Monday evening. The middle blocker posted career highs in kills (20) and hitting percentage (.613). It is her third straight double figure kill output while turning that trick four times in the last five contests. She also tied her career best with seven block assists.
Also tallying a career high was setter Shaylah Kagehiro as the freshman handed out 32 assists. She also had 11 digs for her third double-double of the season. Madison Ogas notched her seventh double-double with a 12-kill, 14-dig evening.
In the opening set the Cougars (10-12, 6-7 PacWest) took a comfortable lead before the midway point and continued to roll. Azusa Pacific never let lead dip below five points. As nice and comfortable as the first frame was, the second set was nip-and-tuck throughout. Hawaii Hilo held a 19-16 lead but the Cougars responded to win seven of the next eight points. Yet Hawaii Hilo (7-11, 5-8) rallied to tie the stanza at 23-23. The Vulcans held one set point but the Cougars came away with a 2-0 match lead after a Hawaii Hilo error.
The home squad didn't fold as they took the third set lead at 3-2 and never trailed the rest of the frame. During the set-clinching win the Cougars used the recipe they had in the first set. They took the lead early and never came close to giving that up in securing the match.
