Victory by the Sea Side

AZUSA, Calif. – The Cougars have been enjoying some solid success away from the mainland.

With their 3-0 (27-25 25-20, 25-23) win against BYU-Hawaii, Azusa Pacific has won four straight matches in Hawaii.

Furthermore, the Cougars have won four straight matches against the Seasiders.

Julianne Miller led the way, once again, for the Cougars offense with an 11-kill evening. Madiosn Ogas chipped-in seven kills while Ashley Midland (6) and Natalie Klapp aided in the winning cause. Midland also contributed three block assists and a block solo.

Along the backline Bailey Henington had 30 digs to pace the specialty effort. Shaylah Kagehiro and Alyssa Tavera had 17 and 14 assists respectively as they directed the offense.

In the opening set the home team was seemingly pulling away but a pesky Cougar (9-11, 5-6 PacWest) squad would have none of it. Down 18-12 and 20-13, Azusa Pacific rallied to pull within two points at 24-22. The Cougars would save two set points then another one (25-24) before kills from Klapp, Miller and Ogas sealed the opening stanza.

Azusa Pacific continued to show a level of strong play in the second set. With the scored knotted at 8-8, the Cougars won eight of the next nine points to grab control of the frame. The Seasiders best efforts at a comeback saw them get within four point but Azusa Pacific took a two-set lead in convincing fashion after a Klapp kill.

The final frame looked to be a quick one as the Cougars raced out to a 16-9 edge. However, BYU-Hawaii (4-16, 2-9) mounted a comeback and eventually took a 22-21 lead. Down the stretch Azusa Pacific sured-up the straight win as the home team committed three errors capped off by a service miscue on match point.

The Cougars continue their swing through the Hawaiian Islands tomorrow when they play Hawaii Pacific.
