AZUSA, Calif. – There was little doubt who controlled the court on Monday evening.
The 24th ranked Azusa Pacific women's basketball squad set a handful of season highs and nearly broke a school record as they cruised to a 99-45 win against Notre Dame de Namur.
Azusa Pacific lifts their record to 13-3 overall and 7-1 in PacWest game. The Argonauts fall to 2-15 and 1-8 respectively.
"We wanted to come out and play with energy and intensity and I thought we were able to do that tonight," head coach T.J. Hardeman said. "The effort was certainly there on the defensive side of the ball. I'm really pleased with how we pressured them and made them uncomfortable."
The Cougars forced Notre Dame de Namur into 28 turnovers which they turned into a 38-2 edge in points off turnovers.
The 54-point victory is the biggest win for the Cougars in their three-plus season against PacWest foes. In just their 16th game of the season, it was the fourth time this season the Cougars broke the 90-point plateau. Last season the trick was turned just three times the entire season. It was the most points an Azusa Pacific squad scored since a 100-point performance against LaSierra during the 2010-11 season.
As a team Azusa Pacific nailed a season high 15 three pointers which eclipsed the previous season high of 11 against Western Washington in late November. The mark was just two away from the school record set during the 2005-06 season against California Baptist.
Cydnie Jones scored a personal season high while playing just 24 minutes. The senior went 8-for-11 from the field en route to her 22-point evening. She connected on all but one of her five shots from behind the arc while also swiping a game high five steals.
Miriam Zabinsky also scored in double figures with an 18-point performance. Joelle Tampien tied an individual Cougar season high with 13 shots from behind the arc as she came off the bench to score 12 points. Kelly Hardeman also scored in double figures (10).
The game was decided during the second 10 minute of action. Azusa Pacific took a 19-15 lead after the first quarter and turned it into a 45-19 edge at intermission. The Argonauts were nearly held scoreless in the frame until a field goal with 1:55 remaining. Between the end of the first quarter and midway through the third quarter the Cougars outscored Notre Dame de Namur 51-6.
Azusa Pacific heads to the Bay Area for a critical three-game stretch beginning Thursday against Holy Names.
