TURLOCK, Calif. – Using a deep bench and quality play at each end of the field, the Azusa Pacific women's soccer team posted a 2-0 win over Cal State East Bay to claim the Warrior Challenge title.

The Cougars won the two-game, four-team event hosted by Stanislaus State by virtue of Thursdays 1-0 win against the host Warriors coupled with Saturday victory.

During Saturday's victory the Cougars used a full complement of players to get the victory as 21 players saw playing time.

"The good things we have good depth and when players aren't on playing up to their capabilities, we can put other players in there who will play up to our standard," head coach Jason Surrell said. "Whether it is the national title game or an exhibition I want us playing our best."

The Cougars scored early in each half in posting the victory. Katelyn Rogers found the back of net in the fourth minute when she took a feed from Mayra Almazan before burying the ball into the net. The forward scored again in the 53rd minute this time during a give-and-go opportunity with Haley Fisher.

"Katelyn is certainly capable of doing what she did today. She was aggressive today and has the technical ability and skills to play at a high level each time she takes the field," Surrell said.

Defensively the Cougars continue to dominate the opposing team's offenses. They have now recorded a shutout in 10 of their last 11 games dating back to the end of last season. On Saturday the Pioneers recorded just one shot on goal and two total shots. Since Oct. of 2012, they have the eighth best goals against average in all of NCAA Division II.

"I think we are about 70, 80 percent of where we need to be defensively. We had some moments where we broke down but we are certainly getting where we want to be," Surrell said. "For the first time in a while we have a team we trained with in practice/preseason and is healthy. That's a huge aspect as each player learns their role."

Mayra Almazan was given the tournament's Golden Ball Award (MVP) while Klinkenberg was recognized as the event's best goalkeeper. Haley Fisher, Allyn Brown, Lindsey Ryals and Rogers were all named to the all-tournament team.

Another aspect of Saturday's win came from the bench as Surrell won his 250th game at Azusa Pacific. It took him just under 16 full seasons and 317 games to attain the career mark. He now has a 250-45-22 record while at the helm at Azusa Pacific.

"I'm not entirely sure what the milestone means but I know that I have been surrounded by good personal on-and-off the field and this win is as much a credit to them," Surrell said.

Azusa Pacific returns home on Thursday when they host UC San Diego at 5 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 10.
