Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | Stephen Hinkel

Fight to the Finish

SAN RAFAEL, Calif. – Persistence. Resolve. Determination.

While the 2015 men's soccer season didn't turn out as anticipated for the Cougars, as a unit they continued to persevere until the final game. Their enduring attitude was rewarded as they won their third straight game by topping Dominican 1-0 to close out the campaign.

"Coming into the season we had high aspirations and we got off to a rocky start. When you think you have a chance to finish in the top half of the conference and push for the playoffs and things don't go your way your season can go south on many levels. The senior's message to the team was to keep fighting for each other, the program and the university. I thought we were able to do to that," said head coach Dave Blomquist. "These last three games we played our best soccer. There is always something to play for and I credit our guys for doing that until the end."

The Cougars (6-9-2, 6-6-1 PacWest) scored the game's only goal in the 24th minute on a penalty kick. Keenan Armbrust scored in his final collegiate game as he converted the opportunity. The Gold River, Calif. native concludes his Azusa Pacific tenure with his second straight winning game winning goal. He ends his career with 26 goals which ranks tied for 17th all-time among Cougar players.

Dominican tested the Azusa Pacific defense on a handful of occasions but the back lines stood tall as they posted their second straight shutout. Tyler Jaramillo saved all seven of the Penguins (2-15-1, 2-10-1) shots on frame.

Prior to the Armbrust penalty kick there were two shots on goal. From that point, each team had quality chances to either knot the score or get a two-goal cushion yet each goal keeper stood strong.

For the home team Jordan Zamora had a team high three shots on goal while Armbrust had a Cougar best two shots on frame.

"We played well in the first half and we had great balance. We had a nice ball into the box that Keenan and he put himself in good position and the defender tackled him from behind. Credit Keenan for getting himself in position to earn the PK. We did have times to make it two-goal cushion but just couldn't get it," Blomquist said. "For the first 20 minutes in the second half they really pushed to get the equalizer. They were in our end and in our box often. Tyler played well and won some good balls in the air and control the box."

The Cougars held an 11-10 edge in overall shots with the home taking seven shots on goal compared to Azusa Pacific's five.
