RIVERSIDE, Calif. – A season that started with distance travels to a foreign country as well as trips to Alaska and Hawaii finished with a contest against their rivals an hour down the road.
After trailing in each set California Baptist rallied for a straight sets win 3-0 (25-21, 25-21, 25-21) on Saturday evening.
The loss ends Azusa Pacific's season with a 14-15 overall record and a 10-10 mark in PacWest matches.
Mattie Shelford closed out her Cougar career with a team high 10 kills. Fellow soon-to-be graduate Crystal Dedes had five kills and a .625 hitting percentage.
The regular setting duo of Jaden Louie and Alyssa Tavera tallied 15 and 12 assists respectively. Senior Ashley Swatek had a 14-dig evening.
California Baptist held a 13-5 edge in total blocks which held the Cougars to a below .100 hitting mark as a team to aid in their victory. Jessica Harris had a team best eight blocks for the Lancers.
A late run by the home squad made the difference in the opening set win. With Azusa Pacific leading 18-16, the Lancers took the lead for good with five unanswered points. The Cougars couldn't rally from their deficit.
The second set was a sequel of the first with California Baptist starting their scoring spurt a bit earlier. The Cougars held a 14-12 lead but the Lancers tallied seven straight points. Despite a deficit of their won, Azusa Pacific rallied to within 23-21 but an attack attempt by Katy Crouse was blocked and the home squad. The home squad won the ensuing point to secure a commanding lead in the match.
Saturday's script continued in third stanza. Azusa Pacific held an 11-8 lead only to see the Lancers rally with six consecutive points to take the lead for good. The Cougars were able to get within a single point twice but never closer.
